Spacecraft Reveals Small Solar Events Have Large Scale Effects
Washington DC (SPX) May 26, 2010NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, has allowed scientists for the first time to comprehensively view the dynamic nature of storms on the sun. Solar storms have been recognized as a cause of technological problems on Earth since the invention of the telegraph in the 19th century. The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), one of three instruments aboard SDO, allowed scientists to disco ... more Stellar Shrapnel Seen In Aftermath Of Explosion
Boston MA (SPX) May 25, 2010This beautiful composite image shows N49, the aftermath of a supernova explosion in the Large Magellanic Cloud. A new long observation from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, shown in blue, reveals evidence for a bullet-shaped object being blown out of a debris field left over from an exploded star. In order to detect this bullet, a team of researchers led by Sangwook Park of Penn State Uni ... more WISE Has A Heart And Soul
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 25, 2010The Heart and Soul nebulae are seen in this infrared mosaic from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE. The image covers an area of the sky over ten times as wide as the full moon and eight times as high (5.5 x 3.9 degrees) in the constellation Cassiopeia. Located about 6,000 light-years from Earth, the Heart and Soul nebulae form a vast star-forming complex that makes up par ... more |

Martian probe Phoenix is kaput: NASAWashington (AFP) May 24, 2010 NASA has declared the US Mars lander Phoenix defunct, writing it off as a victim of the red planet's icy winter after numerous unsuccessful attempts to communicate with it. NASA's Odyssey orbiter passed over the Phoenix landing site 61 times last week in a final effort to communicate but "no transmission from the lander was detected," the space agency said. The craft landed in the planet's far northern region on May 25, 2008, and sent back signals until November of the same year when the sunligh ... read more |
