Space shuttle can fly beyond 2010, if money is there: NASA
Washington (AFP) March 9, 2010
The US space shuttle fleet can continue flying beyond NASA's September 30 deadline if the money is made available to keep it going, a US space agency official told reporters Tuesday. "I think the real issue that the agency and the nation has to address is the expense," said Space Shuttle Program Manager John Shannon, noting the shuttle fleet costs the National Aeronautics and Space Administration 200 million dollars per month to maintain it in working condition. "Where that money comes from is t ... read more

A Lesson From Space: Capillarity In Action
Paris, France (ESA) Mar 10, 2010
In space, many things work differently, but not always. Take the movement of liquid in fine tubes. Gravity has something to do with this capillary action, but what? Students using ESA's 'Take Your Classroom into Space' kit can now find out. Back in 2008, ESA invited European educators to come up with ideas that use the International Space Station (ISS) to illustrate the effects of weightle ... more

How Black Holes May Shape Galaxies
Boston MA (SPX) Mar 09, 2010
New observations from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory provide evidence for powerful winds blowing away from the vicinity of a supermassive black hole in a nearby galaxy. This discovery indicates that "average" supermassive black holes may play an important role in the evolution of the galaxies in which they reside. For years, astronomers have known that a supermassive black hole grows in ... more

Fuel To The Fire
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Mar 09, 2010
What's adding fuel to the fire of climate change? Well, fire. Some stunning images recently taken by NASA's Aqua satellite show one of the Earth's latest firestorms - this one at the Dundes Nature Reserve in Western Australia. Nearly 200,000 acres have gone up in flames as of February 18. That's a lot of carbon added to the atmosphere. The red outlines are the active fires, and the smoky c ... more

US will not 'rush' Russia nuclear deal: White House
Washington (AFP) March 9, 2010
The White House cautioned Tuesday it would not "rush" a long-awaited new arms reduction treaty with Moscow, after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the deal could be ready within three weeks. Russian and US negotiators have been holding intensive talks to agree a new treaty to replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) that expired in December without a successor agreement in place. The talks have been complicated by disagreements over a range of issues, including US plan ... read more
