US official questions China space intentions
Washington (AFP) Jan 13, 2010
A senior US defense official on Wednesday voiced doubts about China's insistence that its use of space is for peaceful means as Washington appealed for steady military ties with the rising Asian power. "The Chinese have stated that they oppose the militarization of space. Their actions seem to indicate the contrary intention," said Wallace Gregson, the assistant secretary of defense in in charge of Asia. "We continue to press the Chinese for explanation," Gregson told a congressional hearing. ... read more

Hints Of Hesperian Lakes
London, UK (SPX) Jan 14, 2010
Spectacular satellite images suggest that Mars was warm enough to sustain lakes three billion years ago, a period that was previously thought to be too cold and arid to sustain water on the surface, according to research published in the journal Geology. The research, by a team from Imperial College London and University College London (UCL), suggests that during the Hesperian Epoch, appro ... more

Just A Few More Approaches To Try For Extrication
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 14, 2010
The list of remaining maneuvers being considered for extricating Spirit is becoming shorter. Results are being analyzed Wednesday, Jan. 13, from a drive on Sol 2143 (Jan. 12, 2010) using intentionally very slow rotation of the wheels. Earlier drives in the past two weeks using wheel wiggles and slow wheel rotation produced only negligible progress toward extricating Spirit. The right ... more

New Research Resolves Conflict In Theory Of How Galaxies Form
Seattle WA (SPX) Jan 14, 2010
For more than two decades, the cold dark matter theory has been used by cosmologists to explain how the smooth universe born in the big bang more than 13 billion years ago evolved into the filamentary, galaxy-rich cosmic web that we see today. There's been just one problem: the theory suggested most galaxies should have far more stars and dark matter at their cores than they actually do. T ... more

Beijing (AFP) Jan 13, 2010
China's government Wednesday called for the acceleration of a proposal to integrate the nation's Internet, telecommunications and broadcast media. The State Council, or Cabinet, decided at a meeting that integration was needed to meet the Chinese public's "increasingly diverse" information needs, a statement summarising the meeting said. However, it said the proposal should include stren ... more

Google case lays bare China challenge: analysts
Beijing (AFP) Jan 13, 2010
Google's threat to pull out of China could force a broader rethink by foreign Internet firms that made uncomfortable compromises to operate in the world's largest online market, analysts say. The announcement that the US Internet giant might abandon China after a spate of cyber-attacks might also just be good business, as it has never matched up to its local rivals, they say. "This is a ... more

Rosetta's OSIRIS Cameras Reveal The Nature Of Asteroid Steins
Paris, France (ESA) Jan 13, 2010
Close-up images of asteroid (2867) Steins, obtained with the OSIRIS cameras on Rosetta, have provided extensive new measurements of the physical properties of this main-belt asteroid. Steins is revealed to be a loosely-bound 'rubble pile' whose diamond shape has been honed by the YORP effect. This is the first time this effect has been seen in a main-belt asteroid. The results are reported by H. Uwe Keller and colleagues in the 8 January issue of Science magazine. ... more
