New Materials Designed To Deal With Hypersonic And Supersonic Hot Stuff
Brisbane, Australia (SPX) Dec 28, 2009
University of Queensland researchers are testing new materials to withstand the extreme heat experienced by hypersonic vehicles in flight so they can fly for substantially longer. Previous Australian experimental flight tests of scramjets, a type of very fast jet engine, have not lasted longer than five seconds. The tests, conducted at Woomera in South Australia over the past eight years, have used scramjet engines made of conventional materials which have problems with extreme heat including melting, and are not designed for re-use. ... read more

Twitter buys geolocation startup Mixer Labs
Washington (AFP) Dec 24, 2009
Twitter not only wants to know what you're doing it wants to know where you are. The micro-blogging service announced Wednesday that it has purchased Mixer Labs, a California-based startup that builds location-tracking tools. "We want to know What's happening?, and more precisely, Where is it happening?" Twitter co-founder Evan Williams said in a blog post. "As a dramatic example, tw ... more

Three NASA space missions planned for 2010
Washington (UPI) Dec 26, 2009
Three space missions in 2010 aim to learn more about the sun, and the climate and the oceans of Earth, NASA officials said. Two of the missions will examine the concentration of salt in oceans and the presence of aerosol particles, such as soot, in the atmosphere. "They are extraordinary timely," said Michael Freilich, head of NASA's Earth-science division, noting the results li ... more

Events that marked the start of the 21st century
Paris (AFP) Dec 27, 2009
Stories that defined the first decade of the 21st century: SEPTEMBER 11 From a lair in Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden shook the United States to the core on a blue-skyed day in 2001, setting the stage for a decade of conflict. Nineteen Al-Qaeda hijackers took over four passenger jets on innocuous domestic flights: two crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York, one into the ... more

Vampires And Collisions Rejuvenate Stars
Garching, Germany (SPX) Dec 28, 2009
Using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have uncovered two distinct kinds of "rejuvenated" stars in the globular cluster Messier 30. A new study shows that both stellar collisions and a process sometimes called vampirism are behind this cosmic "face lift". The scientists also uncover evidence that both sorts of blue stragglers were produced during a critical dynamical event (known ... more

Stellar Mosh Pit Of Crashing Stars Resolves A Mystery
Madison WI (SPX) Dec 28, 2009
For almost 50 years, astronomers have puzzled over the youthful appearance of stars known as blue stragglers. Blue stragglers are the timeworn Hollywood starlets of the cosmos: They shine brightly, they are older than they appear, and they have, disconcertingly, gained mass at a late stage of life. "These blue, luminous stars should have used up their hydrogen fuel and flamed out long ago, ... more
