Future of a Workhorse
Mountain View - July 24, 1999 - Engineers and technologists from government, industry, and academia will gather in the heart of Silicon Valley, next week, to discuss new and emerging technologies, and to ensure that the Space Shuttle remains a reliable and versatile vehicle for the continued development and exploration of space.

The Space Shuttle Development Conference, set for July 28-30 at NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, will set the stage for an open exchange of ideas and the presentation of pioneering solutions to keep the Space Shuttle the safest, most reliable and most capable space vehicle well into the next century. The conference is sponsored by United Space Alliance (USA), NASA's Space Shuttle prime contractor.

"Seventy-five percent of the current Shuttle fleet's useful life is ahead of it," said USA President and CEO Russell Turner. "It's critical that we continue to improve and upgrade the Shuttle because the next generation of reusable launch vehicles is years away. This 'upgrades strategy' parallels that of successful commercial businesses that have improved existing product lines with new technologies, ensuring their continued market leadership."

More than 40 exhibitors will participate in the conference demonstrating and discussing new technology for virtually every major Space Shuttle subsystem, and the nine technical sessions will focus on space vehicle processing, flight operations, propulsion, avionics, advanced Shuttle first stage, the cockpit, power systems, thermal protection systems and information technologies.

Conference highlights will include discussions of the Space Shuttle of the 21st Century, the Space Shuttle's role in the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle as a technology testbed, selecting Space Shuttle upgrades, space commercialization and emerging Space Shuttle missions.

Featured speakers for the conference include Dr. Henry McDonald, Director, NASA Ames Research Center; Joseph Rothenberg, Associate Administrator for Space Flight, NASA Headquarters; Russell Turner, President and CEO, United Space Alliance; Roy Bridges, Director, NASA Kennedy Space Center; Lou Dobbs, Chairman and CEO, Space.com; Gary Hudson, Founder and CEO, Rotary Rocket; and Eric Haseltine, Senior Vice President, Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development.

Since 1981, NASA's Space Shuttle fleet has logged nearly one hundred missions in orbit, and has earned the title as the most reliable launch vehicle in the world. The Shuttle's unparalleled versatility has made it the preeminent vehicle for research and technology testing, satellite retrieval and repair, and large-scale assembly in orbit.

Headquartered in Houston, Texas, USA is one of the world's leading space operations companies. Established in 1996 as a joint venture between The Boeing Company and Lockheed Martin Corporation, the company is responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of the U.S. Space Shuttle fleet.
