U.S. Army to upgrade weapons on Abrams tanks

Kongsberg Defense Systems, a Norwegian government-owned company, has been tapped to deliver additional enhanced upgrades for the U.S. Army's M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank.

The deal, announced Friday by Kongsberg, is worth about $3.9 million U.S. dollars.

The procurement calls for the delivery of additional Protector Remote Weapon Stations, which enhance the visibility for a tank commander on a U.S. Army M1A2 Abrams tank. The station is a modification on the Common Remote Operated Weapon Station, or CROWS, system.

The order dates back to an August 2012 contract between Kongsberg and the Department of Defense, according to the company.

"This contract confirms KONGSBERG's strong relationship with the U.S. Army, and ordering the Protector Low Profile CROWS System for the Abrams Main Battle Tanks and spare parts for sustainment, confirms their continued commitment", PÃ¥l Bratlie, Executive Vice President Protech Systems of Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace, said in a press release.

The Protector RWS provides cover for U.S. military troops by allowing them to fire and engage enemy targets from inside the Abrams tank, as opposed to exposing themselves while operating small- to medium-caliber weapon systems mounted on the outside of the vehicle.

"As of 2017, the Protector system has been chosen by 18 nations and Kongsberg continues to be the world's leading provider of remote weapon stations," the company said.
