Renewable power will match electricity usage at Gillette Stadium for all New England Patriots pre-season, regular and post-season home games. Constellation Energy today announced that its subsidiary, Constellation NewEnergy, is now the "Green Power Behind the Patriots."

Constellation NewEnergy, which has an existing power agreement to serve Gillette Stadium, will secure Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) to match the stadium's electricity usage with wind power before, during and after all New England Patriots pre-season, regular and post-season home games.

"The New England Patriots organization is committed to reducing our collective carbon footprint," said Jonathan Kraft, President of the New England Patriots and The Kraft Group.

"Building upon our already successful relationship with Constellation NewEnergy, we are asking them to help us meet our goal of matching each game with renewable energy."

Gillette Stadium's environmental practices have been a model for large- scale construction projects since ground was broken in 2000. In 2001, the Kraft family, which privately financed the $325 million stadium, received the Environmental Award for Corporate Leadership from the Environment Business Council of New England in recognition of the innovative environmental practices in the stadium's design.

In 2002, the year Gillette Stadium opened, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency presented the Kraft Group with New England's Environmental Merit Award for their achievement. As part of an existing five-year agreement with the New England Patriots that commenced in 2003, and was recently extended, Constellation NewEnergy will now secure wind power for the balance of the agreement.

"We have been incredibly proud to serve the New England Patriots since 2003, and now we are pleased to support their sustainable environmental practices by securing clean, renewable energy sources to match the electricity usage for home games throughout the season," said Michael Kagan, president, Constellation NewEnergy.

"Given the national prominence of the Patriots, this significant action sets a terrific example for other companies and businesses preparing to introduce renewable energy into their portfolio as part of an overall strategy to address climate change."

Jaboticabal, Brazil (AFP) Nov 11, 2007
Brazil is a "quiet green giant" leading the fight against climate change, but its pioneering use of biofuels should be studied carefully before being emulated, UN chief Ban Ki-Moon said Sunday.
