Polaris Defense intros MRZR-D off-road vehicle for military
Minneapolis (UPI) May 19, 2016 -Polaris Defense reports it has added a high-performance turbo-diesel variant to its line of lightweight off-road vehicles for the military.

"The new turbo-diesel powertrain is significant in reducing the logistics burden for select U.S. services and many foreign militaries that have strict requirements for diesel fuel," said Jed Leonard, senior manager, Polaris Defense. "And as importantly for our military customers, we've engineered this diesel powertrain to meet the same mission requirements and extreme off-road performance that Polaris and the MRZR are trusted for in peacetime, security operations, and conventional military missions."

The company's MRZR vehicles, such as the gas-powered MRZR 2 and MRZR 4, can be configured to carry two, four or six persons and their equipment. They are also transportable aboard V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.

Polaris said the new MRZR-D was designed to incorporate military user suggestions.

"Throughout the last three years, we've had an open dialogue with Polaris about how we were using the MRZRs, and enhancements that would help us complete our missions more effectively," said Brendon Reedy, LTATV acquisition program manager for U.S. Special Operations Command. "This has been very beneficial to us in the program office and the warfighters as Polaris has incorporated our requests.

"In the case of the MRZR-D, we suggested changes to improve sightlines and ergonomics, which were incorporated."

The MRZR-D is to be publicly debuted at the 2016 Special Operations Forces Industry Conference in Tampa, Fla., later this month and also at an upcoming exhibition in Canada.

Polaris said production and delivery of the new variant begins this year.

Saab introduced its new Gripen E "Smart Fighter" during a ceremony Wednesday at the company's headquarters in Sweden.

"Gripen is a unique fighter concept, bringing a perfect balance between excellent operational performance, high-tech solutions, cost-efficiency and industrial partnership into one smart fighter system," the company said in a release.

The jet performs a wide range of air-to-air, air-to-surface and reconnaissance missions, the company said, and is crafted to meet current and future threats while meeting strict requirements for reliability, flight safety, training efficiency and low operating costs.

The Gripen E also features a delta-canard configuration with relaxed aerodynamic stability.

The delta wing and canards, coupled with a digital Fly-By-Wire Flight Control System, "give the fighter an optimum combination of manoeuvrability, acceleration, top speed and short-field performance," the company said.

Russia's new missile has 250-mile reach
Moscow (UPI) May 19, 2016 -Russia has a new, long-range missile for its S-300V4 anti-ballistic missile system that is capable of striking targets up to 250 miles away, officials said Thursday.

"That means that Airborne early warning and control aircraft, including AWACS [Airborne Warning and Control System], will noew be unable to enter the 400-kilometer zone without repercussions," Pavel Sozinov, chief designer for the state-run Almaz-Antey defense company, told the TASS news service.

The missile's debut lessens the capabilities of an enemy attack using fighters or other attack aircraft, he said.

Russia's ground forces were first outfitted with the S-300V4 in 2014.

Rheinmetall upgrading Swiss air defense system
Dusseldorf, Germany (UPI) May 19, 2016 - Switzerland's 35mm Oerlikon Skyguard air defense system is to receive an upgrade from Rheinmetall Air Defence AG of Zurich.

The upgrade is to be conducted through 2019 and involve modernization of the fire control system and guns and an overhaul of associated command and control systems.

The work by Rheinmetall Air Defense, a subsidiary of the Rheinmetall Group of Germany, will extend the life of the system to at least 2025, Rheinmetall said.

The specific value of the contract from the Swiss federal procurement agency was not given but is said to be seven figures.

Some work on the project has been assigned to Switzerland's RUAG Aviation at the request of Swiss authorities.

Earlier this year the government had deferred plans to procure a new air-defense system pending a comprehensive review of the requirements.
