S.Korea says N.Korea may be conducting firing drill

by Staff Writers
Seoul (AFP) Dec 8, 2010
South Korea's military said explosions were heard Wednesday from inside North Korean territory in what appeared to be an artillery drill.

"At least one or two explosion were heard from the North's mainland. We assume there might be some military drill underway there," a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff told AFP.

Tensions are acute along the disputed Yellow Sea border after the North's deadly bombardment of Yeonpyeong island on November 23.

A previous artillery drill on the North's mainland sparked a brief panic on the island on November 26.

A presidential official quoted by Yonhap news agency said there were signs at least one shell had been fired by the North but it did not cross the disputed sea border.

"It appears to be a part of regular exercises," the official was quoted as saying.

The South is conducting its own live-fire drills around its coastline this week.
