Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy in support of the AEGIS combat system. The deal, announced March 1 by the Department of Defense, is valued at more than $8.9 million under the terms of a cost-plus-incentive-fee, which is a modification to a previous award. The modified contract seeks to speed up and complete the capability development and fielding of the AEGIS Baseline 9 weapon system, along with integrated AEGIS combat system and remaining technical configurations on multiple naval surface warfare ships. The system is a centralized, automated, command-and-control weapon system used to rapidly detect and track more than 100 targets at once, according to the U.S. Navy. The system is being integrated into U.S. destroyers and cruisers. Work will occur in Moorestown, N.J., and Johnstown, Pa., and is expected to be complete by April 2019. More than $484,000 will be obligated to Lockheed Martin at time of award from Navy fiscal 2018 research, development, test and evaluation funds, the Defense Department said in a press release. The obligated funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
