Intelsat Restores Internet Service To Turkey In Record Time
Washington - Jan 19, 2004 Intelsat last week provided details of a recent event which demonstrates the company's ability to provide disaster recovery services for critical connectivities. When a major undersea cable recently failed, Intelsat was able to restore Internet services to all of Turkey within 38 hours. The high-speed and high-quality connection to the Internet backbone was provided to Turk Telecom through two 155 Mbps links over an Intelsat satellite and utilized Intelsat's Mountainside Teleport in Maryland. To expedite the restoration of this service, Intelsat procured modems and termination equipment from New York and installed them in its Maryland teleport, an important part of its worldwide GlobalConnex(SM) solutions infrastructure. Intelsat and engineers from Turk Telecom in Ankara worked closely together to establish the communications links and to ensure the quality level of the transmission signal from Turkey. "Turk Telecom is truly grateful to Intelsat for being able to restore our Internet connectivity in one and a half days," said Mehmet Toros, Deputy Director General of Turk Telecom. "Having worked with Intelsat for much of its 40 year history, we knew that the superior service they have always provided would come through for us again while trying to quickly and effectively restore our Internet service." "I am very proud of the technical expertise and responsiveness to the customer's needs that Intelsat demonstrated to implement a connection of this size in such an extremely short timeframe," stated Ramu Potarazu, Chief Operating Officer of Intelsat, Ltd. "With satellites positioned in strategic locations around the world and a robust ground infrastructure, Intelsat is well poised to assist customers in such emergency situations."
