Complaints on 'bendy' iPhone, software bugs dog Apple
Washington (AFP) Sept 24, 2014 - Apple released and then abruptly pulled back an update for the iOS software powering the iPhone on Wednesday after users complained of bugs, including one that disabled cellular service.

The apparently botched update came after a rash of complaints posted on social media about the reportedly fragile body on some of the large-screen iPhones which went on sale last week.

Apple released a tweak to its iOS 8 operating system, called iOS 8.0.1, but then pulled the software after complaints that the update disabled cellular service and Apple's touch-identification system.

Apple did not respond to an AFP query. But in a statement to the news website TechCrunch, Apple said: "We have received reports of an issue with the iOS 8.0.1 update. We are actively investigating these reports and will provide information as quickly as we can. In the meantime we have pulled back the iOS 8.0.1 update."

The news caused further embarrassment to Apple after some users posted comments about bends in the bodies of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus when carried in trouser pockets.

On the MacRumors forum of Apple users, one iPhone buyer noted that, after carrying the handset in a front pocket for 18 hours, "I saw the reflection of the window in the iPhones slightly distorted."

The user posted a picture of the bent iPhone, and dozens posted similar complaints on Twitter.

Apple said Monday it sold more than 10 million of the new smartphones in the first three days since launching in a handful of countries, setting a new record for opening weekend sales.

The new iPhones were launched Friday in the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico and Singapore.

They will be available in more than 20 additional countries on September 26, and 115 countries by the end of the year.

Samsung meanwhile said Wednesday it was launching its oversized Galaxy Note smartphone earlier than expected, getting into the key Chinese market ahead of Apple.

Microsoft TV plug-in gadget mirrors mobile screens
San Francisco (AFP) Sept 23, 2014 - Microsoft on Tuesday put its spin on Google's Chromecast with a device that lets people mirror what's on Windows-powered tablets or smartphones on their television screens.

The US technology giant unveiled Microsoft Wireless Display Adaptor, a thumb-drive-size gizmo that plugs into HDMI and USB ports in televisions, and then wirelessly connects with tablets, computer or smartphones running Miracast software.

Several companies already make Miracast plug-in devices for televisions.

"With the Wireless Display Adaptor, I don't have to worry about getting everyone to huddle around a device," Brandon LeBlanc of Microsoft said in a blog post.

"All the content I care about, along with audio, is easily shared on the big screen."

The adaptors were available at Microsoft's online shop for order in the US and Canada at a price of $60, with release set for October.

Google launched a Chromecast "dongle" in July of last year with a price of $35.

Chromecast plugs into television sets and allows people to essentially use smartphones or tablets to orchestrate content streamed directly from the Internet "cloud."

In contrast, the Microsoft adaptor is depicted as beaming onto television what is in browsing software on mobile devices.

French telecom powerhouse Orange on Wednesday announced that Visa, LG Electronics and four more industry veterans have become allies in its program to nurture promising US tech startups.

The companies have created a "Fab Force" accelerator to boost prospects of chosen startups by providing connections, distribution, expertise, resources and more.

Along with Orange, the Fab Force consists of Visa, LG Electronics, Fnac, Morpho, Hilton, and Moet Hennessy.

"Orange has developed a unique and respected ecosystem in Silicon Valley consisting of leading entrepreneurs, thought leaders, venture capitalists, and technology experts," said Orange Silicon Valley chief Georges Nahon.

"Through Fab Force, we've now opened up this ecosystem to some of the world's largest and most respected brands who now have early access to some of Silicon Valley's most innovative startups."

Having innovative entrepreneurs pitch ideas and form early bonds can freshen thinking at big, established businesses and provide chances to get ahead of "disruptive" trends that could upset long-standing business models.

"In a time when brands are looking to find ways to be innovative and find the next WhatsApp, Uber, or Twitch, having a steady access to these up-and-coming startups is important so that you're always keeping track of what's happening in the industry," said Bullpen Capital managing director Paul Martino.

"Otherwise, it just passes you by."

Fab Force partners could even opt to buy a startup if they are keen on what it has created.

- Adapting to disruption -

Internet-driven innovation by startups has shaken up industries from news, music and games to taxi services, investing, and hotels.

Orange Fab startup accelerator here is heading into its fourth season in December, making it an attractive way for established companies looking to connect with startups to "get up and running almost overnight," according to Martino.

Nine startups will be at the Orange Fab offices in San Francisco as the third season nears its end on Wednesday.

Approximately 300 startups are expected to apply to take part in the upcoming Fab season. The field will be culled to no more than 40, with Fab Force members meeting those innovators in person.

Orange Fab will orchestrate the process, and continue to offer investments of as much as $20,000 in some of the startups that make it into the program.

Fab Force partners get to alerted about the startups fitting their interests; be part of the selection committee, and attend demonstration days in held in San Francisco and in Paris.

"Visa and Orange have partnered to introduce innovative ways for consumers to pay using mobile devices in both advanced and emerging payments markets," said Visa senior vice president of innovation and strategic partnerships Bill Gajda.

"We are pleased to work with Orange on the Fab Force program, supporting the start-up community in Silicon Valley to accelerate the creation of new, innovative mobile commerce solutions."

Orange is a leading telecommunications company, operating in 30 countries with a total of 179 mobile customers and 16 million fixed broadband customers worldwide.

Orange reported sales of 41 billion euros last year and claimed 161,000 employees, about 101,000 of them in France, as of June 30 .
