Certifying And Optimizing Biometrics Data Transmission Via Satellite

The new solution, which combines AC Technology BiObex Software, Cross Match Technologies Verifier E Fingerprint Scanning device and the Sun Ray system, marks the first forensic- quality, biometric authentication solution in a UNIX environment that adheres to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards.

Hughes Network Systems is working with Sun Microsystems and AC Technology to conduct certification and optimization of biometrics data transmission utilizing HNS' Direcway broadband satellite system.

As a result, Sun Ray remote access terminals from Sun will be integrated with AC Technology's BiObex middleware for biometrics applications and will be optimized for transmission utilizing Direcway.

The applications include -- fingerprint, iris and facial-characteristic scanning at national borders and in airports; freight inspection at ports; safety enhancements at oil and gas facilities; and a variety of law enforcement, forensic and investigative applications.

The integration and certification is part of an effort to optimize all biometrics applications to work on broadband satellite platforms, and to encourage biometrics applications developers to take advantage of the expanded functionality offered by satellite.

This announcement follows announcements earlier this year from Sun, AC Technology and Cross Match Technologies, regarding the availability of the first high-security, log-on solution to combine biometrics information with Java technology-enabled Smart Card solutions.

The new solution, which combines AC Technology BiObex Software, Cross Match Technologies Verifier E Fingerprint Scanning device and the Sun Ray system, marks the first forensic- quality, biometric authentication solution in a UNIX environment that adheres to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards.

Originally designed for use by the federal government, the new solution can also be used in other markets that require high-security measures for enabling network access, such as financial services and healthcare.

"In the wake of 9/11, federal, state and local agencies, as well as many private sector entities, have accelerated efforts to expand their ability to monitor and manage information collected from disparate geographical locations and then, as appropriate, act upon that information, either at the point of occurrence, or by distributing it across a wide area network," AC Technology President Christopher Sands said.

"HNS is proud to be providing the highly robust and secure broadband satellite delivery system required to enable successful biometrics solutions among many information sources and destinations," said Marc Newman, head of the Hughes Broadband Alliance.

"These new applications will be tested and optimized for immediate use over HNS' Direcway service. Certification will also include SPACEWAY, HNS' next generation broadband satellite system, now in the final stages of development and scheduled for service launch in 2004," Newman said.

"The combination of the highly secure Sun Ray system architecture, AC Technology's and Cross Match Technologies' combined biometrics applications, together with HNS' robust satellite-enabled delivery systems, makes for a unique and powerful solution that is ideal for government and enterprise customers that require high-security measures," said Bob Gianni, Director of Engineering, Desktop Solutions at Sun Microsystems, Inc.

AC Technology, Inc. was selected by Sun Microsystems in 2003 as their Homeland Security Alliance Partner for biometrics. ACT, established in 1991 as an integrator specializing in secure and ruggedized UNIX systems, developed BiObex in response to customers' requests for a biometric management solution for UNIX environments that allowed the customer to select the biometric input mechanism. BiObex has been extremely well received in the DOD, intelligence, and commercial sectors as the first truly multi- biometric fusion product for heterogeneous environments.
