DARPA Team Fly Liquid Hydrocarbon Fueled Scramjet

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Alliant Techsystems and the Office of Naval Research have flown a hypersonic scramjet-powered vehicle from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virgina during a pre-dawn test Saturday December 10. This was the first-ever freeflight of a scramjet-powered vehicle using conventional liquid hydrocarbon jet fuel. full story

Canadian Arrow Hopes A Silver Dart Will Pierce The CATS Barrier

Unknown to the world, Canadian Arrow has been collaborating with Prof Paul Czsyz, a well known hypersonic glider expert, to evaluate and select a design that would provide a solid foundation for an orbital fly back spacecraft. The Silver Dart allows us to build on the work we are now doing with our Canadian Arrow rocket. A cluster of 10 Canadian Arrow rocket engines provide the 700,000 lbs of thrust required to boost the Silver Dart to orbit.

QRIO Robot Ready To Box It Out In The Warehouse

Sony Corp. Friday unveiled an upgrade of its humanoid robot QRIO, which can now recognize boxes and play with them like building blocks. The robot, which stands 600 mm and weighs 7.5 kg, can maintain its balance while using both arms to hold small boxes.

Shuttle Foam To Be Left Off Fuel Tank

William H. Gerstenmaier, director of space operations, at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, said a large section of the foam that shielded pipes and cables on the shuttle's large external fuel tank would most likely not be used again, the New York Times reported Friday.

Opportunity successfully deployed its robotic arm on sol 671 (Dec. 13, 2005) and used it to position the microscopic imager. The cause of a shoulder-joint motor stall during an attempt to deploy the arm on sol 654 appears to be a broken wire in the motor windings.
Virgin GlobalFlyer Record Attempt To Take Off From Shuttle Runway At Kennedy

An exact takeoff date for Virgin Atlantic's GlobalFlyer aircraft has not been determined and is contingent on weather. The flight is expected to take place in February. Steve Fossett will attempt to fly solo around the world, non-stop without refueling, in the aircraft designed by Burt Rutan. It is scheduled to arrive at Kennedy for preflight prep on Jan 6, 2006.
