NASA Selects Teams To Lead New Ion Engine Project

 Washington - June 27, 2002
NASA's Office of Space Science in Washington today announced the selection of a team for the development of an advanced ion propulsion system - an alternative to conventional chemical propulsion that could revolutionize the way we send science missions into the solar system. A second team was selected to develop advanced ion optics, which are critical components of ion engines.

XCOR Test Vehicle Lands Safely After Engine Problems
Mojave - June 27, 2002
XCOR Aerospace announced today that its rocket engine test-bed, the XCOR EZ-Rocket, flew its eleventh test flight today at the Mojave Airport in Mojave, CA. A small electrical problem after take-off ended the planned flight prematurely.

The last five days have witnessed the unprecedented announcement of 25 new planet discoveries. These discoveries are split almost evenly between European and American astronomers. Didier Queloz and his colleagues at the Observatoire de Gen�ve, Switzerland, have found a dozen of the new planets. Their discoveries include the most tantalising one yet: a planet that closely resembles Jupiter in our own Solar System. The find brings astronomers another step closer to detecting an Earth-like world.

The launch of NASA's Comet Nucleus Tour (CONTOUR) spacecraft aboard a Boeing Delta II rocket has been postponed to no earlier than Wednesday, July 3 following the discovery of a possible "dusty" solar array.
