BEIJING, (UPI) July 17 , 2004 -

A team of 12 Chinese scientists is preparing for a North Pole expedition that will result in establishment of China's first research station there.

The group will leave Beijing Monday, en route to Svalbard Island, Norway, the China Daily reported Saturday.

The station is designed to be a two-story building on Svalbard Island, with laboratories, offices, reading rooms, storerooms and dorms that can accommodate 20 to 25 staff. At the top of the building is an observatory.

The first group of scientists will stay in the station for two months to carry out research on atmospheric physics, maritime life and meteorology.
