Brazilian woman wins trip into space
SAO PAULO, (UPI) July 12 , 2004 -

A Brazilian woman won the honor Monday to become the country's first citizen to go into space.

The winner of a contest sponsored by carmaker Volkswagon, 24-year-old Angela Takesawa will be abroad the first commercial space tourist flight set for late 2005 or 2006.

The flight will be conducted by the U.S. company Space Adventure.

Earlier this month, Brazil said it was planning to launch its first space rocket in 2006.

Brazil's quest for the stars was severely sidetracked in August 2003 when a rocket exploded on its launch pad, killing 21 people. The victims included Brazil's top rocket scientists.
