iDirect Platform To Interoperate With O3b Networks' MEO Constellation

-

VT iDirect has announced that it has entered into a technology partnership with O3b Networks Ltd., a newly established satellite operator headquartered in Jersey, UK. iDirect will build features into its iDX platform operating software so that its partners can access O3b's Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite network through the Evolution DVB-S2/ACM product line.

iDirect is a world leader in satellite-based IP communications technology.

O3b Networks plans to deploy a 16-satellite MEO constellation to create a satellite-based global Internet backbone.

Satellites will orbit at only 8,000 km and operate in Ka-band, which will significantly reduce latency and achieve fiber-like data speeds and response times. The O3b Networks constellation will provide a critical influx of cost-effective, high-speed satellite capacity for iDirect's partners, providing a major opportunity to expand cellular backhaul, broadband IP connectivity and other satellite services.

In addition, the O3b Networks system will enable service providers to connect directly to 3G, 4G and WiMAX cell towers, virtually eliminating the need for major capital expenditure on international backbone trunking.

"Through the O3b network, our partners will gain a cost-effective way to deliver broadband connectivity to the 'other 3 billion' people in the world who currently have no form of voice or Internet access. Through a simple software upgrade, our partners can easily and quickly achieve a new level of network speed and performance and expand their services to a ready market." David BETTINGER, Chief Technology Officer, iDirect

Given the mobile dynamics of the MEO constellation, the integration effort will leverage iDirect's widely deployed technologies that support mobility for applications across the maritime, aviation and military and defense sectors.

The software upgrade will feature an automatic satellite beam switching feature that will allow the iDirect remote to maintain seamless connectivity from one satellite to the next as they circle the earth five times each day.

"We are pleased to have a global technology leader like iDirect in our partnership program. iDirect is a proven leader in satellite communications, and its platform is relied on by the world's largest satellite and cellular operators. We value the expertise they can bring to our venture, and look forward to working with iDirect's global network of partners." Greg WYLER, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, O3b Networks

O3b Networks is backed by venture capital from Google, Liberty Global, HSBC Bank and other investors.
