An offshore typhoon lashed Tokyo and eastern Japan with heavy rains and winds on Monday, injuring at least two people and grounding scores of international flights, officials said.

Typhoon Krovanh uprooted trees in some coastal areas as it raged along the Pacific coast of Japan, packing gusts of up to 144 kilometres (90 miles) per hour, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The eye of the typhoon was about 170 kilometres (100 miles) east of Tokyo at 5pm local time (0800 GMT), moving north-northeast and not on course to make landfall in Japan.

Television footage showed trees dislodged by strong gusts in Kanagawa prefecture, west of Tokyo.

At least two people were injured in typhoon-related accidents in Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures, local police said.

Some 27 international and 30 domestic flights were cancelled and scores more delayed from Tokyo's Narita and Haneda airports, while ferry services were suspended in Tokyo Bay.

The weather agency issued warnings and advisories for landslides, floods, gales and high waves for Tokyo and nearby areas.

The flooding, which on Thursday led the government to enact an emergency plan, forces this 17-year-old tailor's assistant and thousands like him to "eat, pray and do everything in the water." Sandbags mark out the ... read more
