SES grows its 23.5 degrees East reach in Benelux by 20 percent

SES reports that the technical reach of its ASTRA Satellite System in the Benelux markets from the 23.5 degrees East orbital position has increased by more than 140,000 households to 870,000, an annual growth of 20 percent.

In total, 1.1 million homes in the Benelux are today receiving their programmes from ASTRA. 80 percent of them are receiving programmes from the two orbital positions 23.5 and 19.2 degrees East while the other 20 percent are served from 19.2 degrees East only.

These are the results of the year-end Satellite Monitor that SES presents annually.

The rapid growth of the ASTRA 23.5 degrees East reach in the Netherlands and Belgium has been fuelled by the launch of Dutch regional channels and a wide range of HD channels via M7 Group-owned providers CanalDigitaal and TV VLAANDEREN.

The orbital position 23.5 degrees East is also used for the transmission of the Luxembourg TV channels.

The dual reception device DUO LNB enables ASTRA households to receive programmes from both orbital positions, 19.2 and 23.5 degrees East, allowing them to watch a wide range of free-to-air HD channels from the neighbouring German speaking market. The ASTRA Satellite System is home to the largest HD platform in the Benelux, with more than 40 HD channels.

The French-speaking part of Belgium receives a wide range of channels including all Wallonian and French channels via the 19.2 degrees East position as part of the M7-owned TeleSAT bouquet.

This great success in a region formerly dominated by terrestrial infrastructures is the result of a very close and solid cooperation between all market partners involved: M7 Group, free-tv broadcasters, the satellite equipment resellers, installers and SES.".

SES-4 Satellite Now Operational
Luxembourg (SPX) Apr 19 - SES reports that the SES-4 satellite is now fully operational and ready for service at the orbital location of 338 degrees East.

SES-4 was successfully launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on board an ILS Proton Breeze M booster on February 15th, 2012. SES-4 replaces the NSS-7 satellite at 338 degrees East longitude and provides replacement as well as incremental capacity at this well-established SES orbital slot over the Atlantic Ocean.

SES-4 is a 20-kilowatt satellite manufactured on the flight-proven Space Systems/Loral 1300 platform, with 52 C-band and 72 Ku-band transponders. It has C-band beams serving the eastern hemisphere of Europe and Africa and providing full coverage of the Americas, plus a global C-band beam to support mobile and maritime customers.

Four high-power, regional Ku-band beams provide service to Europe, the Middle East, and West Africa, as well as North and South America, with extensive channel switching capability between C- and Ku-band transponders for enhanced connectivity. The satellite is designed to deliver services for 15 years or more.

Martin Halliwell, Chief Technology Officer of SES, stated: "We are delighted to see the 50th spacecraft in the global SES fleet go live and congratulate the technical teams involved for the successful bringing into operation of this important addition to our fleet. SES-4 offers state-of-the-art transmission capacity to SES customers across three continents and for a wide array of applications, including video distribution with DTH power-levels, VSAT, government and maritime services."
