Romania flood death toll climbs to 25: official
by Staff Writers
Bucharest (AFP) July 3, 2010

The death toll in Romania from storms and floods has climbed to 25, the emergency situations inspectorate said Saturday as the Danube river rose to a record level in some places.

The new toll came after a young man taken by waters on Monday in the northern department of Suceava was found dead, and two other people were killed by lightning, the spokesman for the inspectorate, Alin Maghiar, told AFP.

Romania has hit by storms and floods since June 21, forcing some 16,500 people to leave their homes. Some have been able to get back since then.

According to officials, the Danube rose to a record level in the southern town of Fetesti, reaching 724 meters (2,375 feet), and in the eastern city of Galati at 669 meters.

On Friday, more than 1,600 homes and 2,700 hectares of pastures, forests and farmlands were flooded across the country.

Damage caused by the flooding could amount to more than 0.6 percent of gross domestic product, Interior Minister Vasile Blaga said Tuesday.
