A landslide caused by heavy rain killed 24 migrant mineworkers in northern Myanmar, police confirmed Thursday.

The accident at Lonkhin near Phakant -- in the country's northernmost state of Kachin -- happened during a period of severe wet weather from July 4-6, an official from the state's police force said.

"Altogether 24 people were killed -- 11 men and 13 women -- during the landslide," he told AFP, adding that the victims were migrants working in local jade mines.

He said transportation and water levels were now "back to normal" in the area.
