The Kenya Marine Authority (KMA) said it narrowly averted an oil spill Thursday after a Liberia-flagged tanker that developped a list as it sailed into Mombasa port was stabilized.

"This morning, the MT "Voge Trust", an oil tanker flying the Liberian flag was entering the port of Mombasa when she developed a list. KMA mobilized and dispatched her rescue and pollution control teams to the ship," the authority said in a statement signed by KMA Director General Nancy Karigithu.

The teams established that the cause of the list was internal and it was successfully corrected.

"The vessel stabilized and subsequently proceeded to dock where she is now awaiting to discharge her cargo (oil)," KMA said, adding: "There were no casualties reported, no oil spill occurred in the process and the vessel is no longer in danger".

The authority said its inspectors will board the ship to investigate further.
