Sensing Systems Provides Digital Media Handling Software For Navy UAVs

Sensing Systems LLC (Sensing) has received a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase II award to pursue work under SBIR topic N02-159, Digital Motion Imagery (MI) Manipulation for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Sensing will receive $750,000 of investment funding over two years to foster development of its digital media handling software product, which can be used to replace antiquated analog media technology and modernize U.S. Navy UAV control stations.

Sensing's novel software system guarantees real-time performance and provides advanced image processing and high-level computer vision capabilities such as image mosaicing and feature tracking. Sensing's software design assures simplified integration into existing systems, and promises to accelerate the transition from analog to digital media systems.

Sensing was offered the award following a competitive six month Phase I effort that ended in July 2003, during which Sensing leveraged its image processing and computer vision expertise to produce a proof-of-concept client/server digital media system that met the Navy's digital acquisition, display, archival, annotation, and processing requirements.

Chad Partridge, one of the founders of Sensing and the principal investigator for the Phase II effort, noted, "We are extremely proud of our Phase I accomplishments. All of us at Sensing Systems regard our exclusive Phase II award as a significant gateway opportunity for the utilization of our software in military and commercial systems."

In the 3rd quarter of 2004, Sensing will complete development of its commercial digital media handling software product and, in 2005, will demonstrate integration of the core features of its software within the Navy's Tactical Control System (TCS), the existing UAV control software used to operate Firescout, a Naval UAV. At the same time, Sensing will explore commercial uses outside of Naval systems.

Sensing's software has a highly robust, modular, and customizable design ideal for use in military and commercial applications requiring the handling and storage of digital video and other related data. The software provides a core set of digital media system features that allow users to exploit the full capability of digital media for their own unique requirements.

Promising applications include processing of UAV mission video for recognition and classification of possible targets, handling of surveillance video with embedded data from security badge scanners and environmental sensors, and interaction with sports video libraries to produce custom video clip sequences.

Sensing will invest a portion of the received funds into their own R&D and marketing effort to introduce its digital media software product into other markets involving defense, surveillance, and entertainment.

GoldenEye-100 UAV Successfully Completes Initial Flight Test Program

Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation has successfully completed its initial flight test program for the company's GoldenEye-100 unmanned aerial vehicle. Flight testing began in September 2003 and all of the GoldenEye-100's flights, including the first flight last fall, have been in fully autonomous control modes.
