Delphi Taps New Market For Telematics

Delphi will co- develop and manufacture the next generation of transceiver modems for Stellar Satellite Communications, company officials announced here Monday at Convergence 2004.

Delphi will supply two new models of two-way satellite communicator modems to Stellar including a high-volume telematics modem for both mobile and fixed equipment applications.

The other sophisticated Delphi modem will utilize sensors and software to relay information to and from equipment requiring advanced field intelligence, according to Jeff Owens, Delphi vice president and president of Delphi Electronics and Safety.

Both modems support global remote management of equipment and assets through ORBCOMM's satellite network for two-way satellite data communications. The modems will meet the rigorous performance and reliability standards of Delphi products, and will benefit the industry by providing a consistent supply of automotive-grade new and replacement modems.

"We are pleased to team with Stellar to provide the technology and manufacturing capability to help our customers find an 'end-to-end solution' for this market," said Beth Schwarting, general director of Sales and Marketing for Delphi Electronics & Safety.

"Producing the units in high volumes will enable a cost-effective alternative for industrial and commercial companies seeking to improve productivity."

Stellar will include the two modems in a number of different applications for industrial customers including commercial vehicle fleet and logistics management for trucks, barges, fishing vessels, locomotives, heavy machinery and containers.

In addition, the modems can monitor fixed assets including pipelines, oil wells, energy meters and storage tanks to share information through satellite data messaging. The modems will be capable of providing two-way tracking and monitoring of gas and oil production equipment, liquid petroleum operations, environmental and weather information and utility meters.

"The smart, highly versatile modems being produced will help revolutionize the satellite data market with lower price points than ever before," said Jerry Eisenberg, ORBCOMM chief executive officer.

AMC-15 Successfully Launched From Baikonur

The Americom-15 (AMC-15) satellite of SES Americom, an SES Global company, roared into space onboard a Russian Proton M/Breeze M launch vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome (Kazakhstan) today at 3:23 a.m. Baikonur time (11:23 p.m. CET; 5:23 p.m. Eastern U.S. on October 14th). After 6 hours and 55 minutes, the spacecraft separated from the Breeze M upper stage and was placed into geostationary target orbit (8:18 a.m. St. Petersburg time; 6:18 a.m. CET; 12:18 a.m. Eastern U.S.).
