Lexington - June 23, 1998 - Raytheon has received contracts totaling $11.3 million from the Air Force Electronic Systems Center, Hanscom AFB, Mass., for modem and processor production upgrades to the Milstar Extremely High Frequency (EHF) Satellite Communications Terminal Systems.
The modem upgrades will enable the existing Air Force satellite
communications terminals to operate with the recently developed EHF payloads on the U.S. Navy's Ultra High Frequency Follow-On Satellites.
The processor production contract provides for the replacement of the central processing units (CPUs) on all existing Milstar EHF terminals. With performance increases of 150 times existing units, the upgrade places Raytheon at the industry forefront in transitioning to a next generation, open architecture, Versa Module Europe (VME) terminal capable of accommodating planned future upgrades to the Milstar system.
Quentin George, manager of Raytheon Systems Company's Communication Systems unit, said, "This is another example of Raytheon's introduction of affordable open systems/commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)-based technical solutions for military SATCOM systems. These upgrades increase the operational utility and service life of the systems. The Air Force's strategic mission and emerging global conventional rapid response command and control strategy is better served while life cycle costs are reduced."
