Xantic First With Beta-Test BGAN

Xantic is the first satcom provider to start beta testing with a customer for the BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) service. For the purposes of this test, Xantic is working with Inmarsat and TET Satellite Solutions.

The UK-based company TET Satellite Solutions is the first Inmarsat service provider to enter into BGAN beta tests with Xantic. "The Xantic BGAN systems will be thoroughly examined, including not only the terminals but all the elements that make up the service," comments Harry Nibbeling, Senior BGAN Developer at Xantic.

In preparation for the beta test, Xantic carried out extensive testing at the Inmarsat test facilities in Malaga, Spain. Testing then continued at TET's site in Pretoria, South Africa on 24 October. The beta tests are the final step before the new BGAN service from Inmarsat is launched.

BGAN will offer a comprehensive and easy-to-use mobile satellite solution. With a higher bandwidth of up to 492 kbit/s and improved portability via a broad selection of terminals, BGAN will also offer major opportunities for customers outside the traditional range of mobile satellite communication users.

"Xantic is keen to make the most of these opportunities in new markets," comments Pieter Eelkman Rooda, CEO of Xantic.

"We have used our in-house IP expertise to add proposition elements such as online billing, provisioning and cost control facilities to the BGAN service for Xantic customers. There is also a range of service-related value adds available, including a personal firewall and support for the end-to-end quality of service networks."

All this and more has already been successfully tested with Inmarsat at Xantic's Land Earth Station in Burum, the Netherlands, where Inmarsat BGAN is hosted.

"We are very excited to have reached this important milestone in the final preparations for the launch of BGAN. Feedback on the whole BGAN proposition from beta test customers means that we can be more confident that we will deliver what customers really want," says David Kingdon Jones, BGAN commercial director, Inmarsat.

"Our ambition is to become the major BGAN player from day one," concludes Eelkman Rooda. "We will therefore be fully ready for the commercial launch of BGAN."

Sea Launch Departs Home Port For Inmarsat-4 Mission

The Odyssey Launch Platform and the Sea Launch Commander have departed Home Port in Long Beach, Calif., for Sea Launch's fourth mission of the year. The Sea Launch team is preparing to launch the Inmarsat-4 (I-4) communications satellite on Nov. 4, at the opening of a 30-minute launch window, at 6:22:54 am Pacific Time (14:22:54 GMT).
