The satellite, atop a Long March 2-III carrier rocket, was fired from the Jiuquan Satellite launch centre in Gansu province, said Xinhua news agency.

It was the 21st scientific satellite China has launched.

Xinhua said it would be used to carry out land surveying and mapping and other experiments.

China has now launched 86 satellites by Long March rockets.

In October 2003 China became the third country after the United States and the Soviet Union to achieve manned space flight when astronaut Yang Liwei orbited the Earth 14 times.
