Busy Day of Launches
September 23, 1997 - Ariane Space successfully launched the 100th Ariane vehicle (the 71st Ariane 4) from Guiana Space Center (CSG) in South America just before midnight local time.
The Ariane 42L-3 with two liquid strap-on boosters, was used to launch the 3,455-kg Intelsat 803 satellite (38C/6Ku), built by Lockheed Martin Telecommunications. This is the 16th Intelsat Ariane launch since 1983 with two more on Ariane�s manifest.
Meanwhile, US based Final Analysis has seen its FAIsat-2v satellite successfully launched by Kosmos-3M booster rocket. Final Analysis, says it plans to launch a further 12 similar communications satellites using Russian rockets over the coming two years.
The new Plesetsk base is an alternative launch center to the main Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, which is used for manned launches to Mir.
