MSV Appoints NTP Founder Donald Stout To Lead Its Patent Management Strategy

Reston VA (SPX) Nov 07, 2005
Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV) has announced that it had reached an agreement with Donald E. Stout to lead MSV's patent licensing and enforcement efforts.

Mr. Stout brings to MSV an extensive legal and business experience in the management and enforcement of patents and is the founder and chief strategist of NTP.

Mr. Stout prepared the original NTP patents and has managed NTP's highly successful patent litigation strategy. Mr. Stout's background in wireless patents extends beyond NTP to the representation of multinational companies including Nokia and TRW. Mr. Stout will report directly to Alexander Good, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MSV.

"We are delighted that someone of Mr. Stout's expertise and proven track record will be directing MSV's strategic implementation, licensing and the enforcement of its intellectual property portfolio," said Alexander H. Good.

"With a rapidly growing patent portfolio both domestically and internationally, Mr. Stout's mandate is to actively and aggressively manage our fully patented ATC vision."

"MSV has a substantial and growing portfolio of issued and pending patent applications on a multitude of key Ancillary Terrestrial Component (ATC) technologies. My efforts will be directed toward securing the broadest and most comprehensive coverage possible from that portfolio and ensuring a proactive approach to protect rigorously these substantial assets," said Mr. Stout.

"Similar to NTP that has a patent portfolio required for implementing wireless email systems, MSV has a patent portfolio that will be relevant to industry players deploying an ATC network. I look forward to providing guidance to MSV similar to the direction I have provided to NTP."

"The hiring of Mr. Stout is an important step in our continuing journey to form a compelling array of ATC enabling patents," said Dr. Peter D. Karabinis, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of MSV.

"With over 4000 patent claims issued or filed, we believe that our patent portfolio is an enormously valuable asset. Together with Don Stout, we will continue to work to improve the patents, file additional patents and enhance our patent management. We are confident that the breadth and scope of our ATC patents will be essential for the deployment of any ATC network."

MSV currently holds over 800 issued and 500 additional published ATC patent claims to date. These 1300 issued and published claims span the breadth of all ATC network features, functions and system components (including the satellite, terrestrial, satellite gateways and end user equipment).

MSV has filed over 100 additional patent applications in the U.S. alone since 2001. Patent filings are in place not only in the U.S. but also in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia and elsewhere.

As previously announced, the MSV cache of patent filings was further enhanced by MSV's acquisition of a portfolio of hybrid satellite-terrestrial patents from Celsat, with issue dates as early as 1991.
