NASA on Thursday abandoned the first attempt to land the Atlantis space shuttle as it hit bad weather on its return to Earth from a 13-day mission.

Rains spread over some 50 kilometers (30 miles) around the Florida landing area prohibited the shuttle's landing, mission control in Houston, Texas, said.

The US space agency said a second attempt at landing the shuttle and its seven crew might be made at the Kennedy Space Center at 1930 GMT Thursday.
