Sharp profit jumps 22.1 percent in first half

Japanese high-tech firm Sharp Corp. said Wednesday its net profit jumped 22.1 percent from a year earlier to 27.9 billion yen (258 million dollars) for the six months to September.

Sales in the first half rose 12.6 percent to 1.1 trillion yen while interim pretax profit increased 36.3 percent to 52.3 billion yen, the company said.

For the year to March 2004, Sharp forecast a net profit of 57 billion yen, up from an earlier projection of 50 billion yen, with pretax profit seen at 110 billion yen compared to 100 billion yen and sales at 2.25 trillion yen, up from 2.15 trillion yen
