SRIHARICOTA, India (AFP) Oct 17, 2003
India Friday sent a rocket carrying a 1,360-kilogramme (2,992 pound) remote sensing satellite into space Friday, witnesses said.

The rocket blasted off at 10:24 am (0454 GMT) into a cloudy sky on a drizzly day from this remote site, about 100 kilometers (63 miles) north of the southern Indian city of Madras.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said the satellite named Resourcesat-1 was launched by the locally-built Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle.
