India's premier tech institute to set up cyber security research centre
NEW DELHI (AFP) Aug 12, 2003
An Indian company and top educational institution announced Tuesday they would set up a state-of-the-art research hub to study cyber security, particularly the threat of cyber terrorism.

"Our endeavour is that in two to three years, this centre should be the hub of research, technology and development of net security solutions," said Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) director G.S. Dhande.

IIT is India's top technology institute and is based in the northern city of Kanpur, where the proposed centre would be set up.

The project is part funded by iPolicy Networks, a company dealing with hi-tech security.

"Cyber security is vital for India's national security especially after 9/11," said iPolicy chairman Prabhu Goel.

"The basic question we have to ask is: are you aware who's reading your e-mail? In case of a cyber attack, your armies could cease to march, the stocks could fall, your social identity could go and you could be under threat from terrorists."

Goel's firm has already pitched in one million dollars as an initial contribution for the pioneering project in India and said more contributions would follow.
