India's software major to expand operations in the country

India's second largest software exporter Infosys Technologies announced Monday it plans to invest 2.5 billion rupees (54.3 million dollars) to expand its facility in the western Indian city of Pune.

The Nasdaq-listed firm said it had acquired an additional 40 hectaresacres) of land in Pune's Infotech Park.

"The expansion will enable the Infosys centre to house an additional 5,000 software professionals," the company said in a statement.

The Pune centre, started in 1981, handles clients from Canada, the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Infosys clocked software export revenues of 35.4 billion rupeesmillion dollars) during the last fiscal year to March 2003.
