India's annual PC sales jump 37 percent in fiscal 2002-2003
NEW DELHI (AFP) Jul 11, 2003
Increased corporate demand spurred personal computer (PC) sales in India to a 37 percent increase totaling 2.3 million units, the country's leading hardware lobby group announced Friday.

Vinnie Mehta, executive director of The Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT) said the "enormous growth" in PC sales would bolster the confidence of the industry.

"The remarkable turnaround in PC sales will help bolster the confidence of the computer hardware industry in India, especially the domestic players," Mehta said.

"The domestic IT industry has focused attention on producing and developing low-cost computing solutions and the shift towards growing PC purchases in even smaller towns and cities by corporates is likely to continue."

MAIT said Indian brands grew by 88 percent in fiscal 2002-2003 grabbing a market share of 26 percent. Multinational brands accounted for 28 percent of the overall market, registering a 10 percent drop in sales from the previous year, MAIT said.

"With robust growth prospects PC sales are expected to cross 2.7 million units next year," Mehta said.
