Japanese hi-tech makers set up standard for high-definition camcorders
TOKYO (AFP) Jul 04, 2003
Major Japanese hi-tech firms said Friday they have agreed on a common standard for high-definition digital camcorders.

Canon Inc., Sharp Corp., Sony Corp., and Victor Company of Japan (JVC), said they planned to finalise the specifications of the common standard, tentatively called "HDV," around September and would actively promote it throughout the industry.

The new format recorded both video and audio through compression by MPEG encoding, the firms said.

It will be able to record and play back high-definition video on internationally accepted DV format cassette tapes.
