Shipments are forecast to increase five-fold to 114 million units of semiconductors, International Data Corp. (IDC) said in a press statement.
The popularity of mobile computers equipped with wireless networking capabilities and an increase in the build-up of wireless "hotspots" have created a "healthy environment" for the growth, IDC said.
"The next several years are going to witness rapid development of WLAN infrastructure, which in turn will generate considerable demand for WLAN semiconductors," said IDC analyst Ken Furer.
He said the market was expected to peak in 2005 with growth remaining flat in the following two years.
