India test-fires surface-to-air missile

India Tuesday sucessfully test-fired its medium range surface-to-air Akash (Sky) missile from the Chandipur testing range off its eastern coast, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency said, quoting defence officials.

The missile, first tested in July 2000, was most recently test-fired on June 2 and May 29.

The locally-built multi-target missile has a range of 25 kilometresmiles) and is one of five missiles currently under different stages of development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Akash can carry a 50 kilogram (110 pound) warhead and can simultaneously track several targets.
