India again test-fires surface-to-air missile

India Monday again test-fired its medium range surface-to-air Akash (Sky) missile from the Chandipur testing range off its eastern coast, an official said.

The test was successful, a defence official said, adding the missile was fired at 1.15 pm (0745 GMT).

The missile was last test-fired last Thursday and the initial test was in July 2000.

The locally built multi-target missile has a range of 25 kilometresmiles) and is one of five missiles currently under different stages of development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Akash can carry a 50 kilogram (110 pound) warhead and can simultaneously track several targets.
