Japan's Sharp develops ultra high-resolution LCD to be used by Microsoft
TOKYO (AFP) May 21, 2003
Japanese electronics firm Sharp has developed an ultra high-resolution liquid crystal display (LCD) to be used for a next-generation operating system by software giant Microsoft, a spokesman said Wednesday.

The monitor generates more than one billion colours, 64 times as many as the current limit of 16.77 million colours, the Sharp Corp. spokesman said.

The monitor shows very slight differences in shades; it can be used in hospitals and for computer graphics and digital photo processing.

"We plan to make sample shipments next year," the spokesman said.

The LCD is designed for Microsoft Corp.'s newest operating system, code-named "Longhorn," scheduled for release in 2005.
