More than 30,000 hectares of forest are ablaze in Russia's far east, the regional forestry protection centre said Monday, describing the situation as critical.

The situation is particularly serious in in the Amur and Khabarovsk regions where the vast majority of the fires are concentrated.

Some 4,000 firefighters, backed by planes, helicopters and special equipment, have been mobilsied to fight the fires, blazing out of control with very little recent rainfall in the area.

Such blazes destroy a million hectares of vegetation in far east Russia each year.
