Death toll in Turkish quake rises to 140
ANKARA (AFP) May 03, 2003
The death toll in a powerful earthquake which hit the eastern Turkish province of Bingol has risen to 140, officials said on Saturday.

Another body was pulled out early on Saturday from the rubble of a boarding school at Celiksuyu, where nearly 200 pupils were initially trapped, taking the death toll there to 64, the crisis centre set up in the prime minister's office said.

According to the centre, 114 pupils have been rescued from the four-storey building, which collapsed when the quake struck in the dead of night.

The centre said it believed another 27 children were trapped under the wreckage but rescuers said they were losing hope of pulling out any more alive.
