VATICAN CITY (AFP) May 02, 2003
Pope John Paul II sent a message of condolence to Turkey on Friday after the deadly earthquake that claimed at least 105 lives -- many of them chilren -- and injured nearly 500 others.

"The Holy Father has asked me to let you know that his thoughts and prayers are with all those hit by this new tragedy," said the message from the Vatican's number two, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, and addressed to Turkey's civilian and religious authorities.

"He asks God to give courage to the wounded and the families who lost their loved ones and their property" and to "all the Turkish people in this new test", the message said.
