Police chief sacked after clashes in quake-hit city

The police chief of the quake-hit Turkish city of Bingol was sacked Friday, only hours after violent clashes broke out between security forces and residents protesting poor government relief efforts, Anatolia news agency reported.

Police Nuri Ozdemir was removed from office on the orders of Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu, the agency said.

Earlier Friday, security forces in in Bingol fired dozens of rounds of warning shots into the air after angry protestors tried to storm the governor's office and attacked police with sticks and stones.
