At least 60,000 evacuated in floods in Argentina
BUENOS AIRES (AFP) Apr 30, 2003
More than 60,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in central Argentina amid widespread flooding, authorities said Tuesday.

Some 60,000 people fled their homes in the city of Santa Fe and in rural areas of Santa Fe province, while another 1,500 were evacuated from homes in neighboring Entre Rios province where a 44-year-old man drowned in floodwaters from last week's heavy rains.

Santa Fe governor Carlos Reutemann said the floods were the worst in the history of the city, which was founded in 1573.

Waters in the Salado River, which runs through the city, hit the eight meter mark, far past the previous record of 7.19 meters.
