Earthquake shakes southern Greece

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook the southern Greek Peloponnese region early on Tuesday, the Athens Geodynamic Institute said.

Local police reported no injuries or material damage.

The quake was registered at 0151 GMT with its epicentre 390 kilometresmiles) to the southwest of Athens.

It was felt throughout the regions of Messinia and Laconia, a highly active seismic region.

In 1986, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the nearby town of Kalamata, killing 20 people.
