China's military joins fight against SARS
BEIJING (AFP) Apr 28, 2003
China's ex-president and current military chief Jiang Zemin has approved the transfer of 1,200 military doctors and nurses to civilian hospitals to help fight SARS, state media reported Monday.

The medical staff have been transferred from military hospitals to hospitals designated to treat patients suffering from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, the Xinhua news agency said.

To date, 333 of the military medical personnel have arrived from Beijing, Shenyang and Jinan military areas in northern China to a SARS hospital located in Xiaotangshan, a suburb of Beijing, Xinhua said.

The hospital has 1,000 beds and needs 1,200 medical workers. The remaining military staff will be at their new posts by May 5, the report said.
