Pakistani authorities seize arms smuggled from Afghanistan
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) Apr 27, 2003
Pakistani authorities Sunday seized a large quantity of Russian-made arms from a village in the northwestern tribal belt along the Afghanistan border, officials said.

The weapons, stored in a house in Matta Sangar village, about two kilometers (about one mile) from the southeastern Afghan province of Paktika, included 99 surface to surface missiles, 27 missile fuses, six remote-control bombs and three anti-tank mines, they said.

Kifayatullah Khan, in charge of the administration in the tribal Kurram Agency, told reporters the arms were "smuggled from Afghanistan for subversive activity in Pakistan."

The arms bore Russian markings, said Khan without specifying the type of missiles and saying only that they had a range of 12 kilometers.

He said an Afghan national had been arrested and investigations were underway.

The latest haul came some 10 days after Pakistani authorities seized 38 grenades and 21,000 rifle rounds from a truck at Torkham, 45 kilometers northwest of here.

The authorities arrested the truck driver who was an Afghan refugee.
