Alcatel space unit to cut 650 jobs this year

 French telecommunications equipment maker Alcatel said Friday it will cut 650 jobs worldwide at its Alcatel Space operations this year, confirming earlier reports from labour union sources.

About 350 jobs will be cut in France, the company said. Alcatel will close its Space operations in Denmark, cutting 100 jobs, and in Norway, cutting 130 jobs.

Alcatel's space operations in Switzerland are also expected to be sold in the near future, with the loss of 70 jobs.

Alcatel Space currently employs 6,000 people, of which 4,800 are in France.
